Favorites For This Week

Brody has rediscovered Goodnight Moon. We have been reading multiple times every night this past week or so. What is it about this book that kids love? What is it that I love about this book? I could (and do) read this over and over again. I think we need a new copy of this. Ours is getting a little shabby.

The Babe & I is a book that Collin picked at the library. I let the boys pick whatever books they want for bedtime stories, and you just never know what you are going to get. This book was completely different than I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be some fairy tale book about watching a Babe Ruth baseball game, but it was showing the hard times a family went through during the Depression and how the family pulled together to make ends meet. It talked about pride and hard work. Collin really enjoyed it too. Probably because the little boy in the book was able to sell newspapers, and that would be a dream job for him right now. He is my little entrepreneur.

And then of course our beloved, Percy Jackson. We are about 5 chapters into the second book. We can't get enough!

What are you reading lately?

Percy Jackson

We went on vacation for a couple weeks and I bought this book to read to the boys. We are about 5 or 6 chapters into it, and we are loving it! It's a little over Brody's head, but Collin can't get enough of it. "Just one more page, mom!" I really like it too. It's always nice when I like the book that we are reading aloud. So far I give it a five stars. It's a great action/fantasy/adventure book for boys (and boy-moms.)
I will be posting more frequently now that we are back in town and kind of back on schedule.

Let the Reading Begin!

It's that time already. School is out and the Summer Reading Program is just beginning. I thought I would give you a sample of the books that we are reading. The first book is Time Spies, Secret in the Tower. This is the first book in the series, and it is perfectly age appropriate for Collin. I will let you know how it goes since we are only a couple of chapters into it right now.

The next book is Collin's choice. I don't know how many times we have read this book, but the boys think it is hilarious every time. It's a fun read out loud book. Very silly and appropriate for boys.

This next book is a book that I remember reading as a child, and it is perfect for Collin to read aloud to Brody. I love when Collin reads to Brody! It is so awesome to see them have fun and be nice to each other.

These are the three categories that we will be reading this summer: chapter books to read aloud, books that both boys will love to have read to them, and books that Collin can read.
What are you reading??

Summer Reading = Free Books

I wanted to share a few reading programs that I have found. What a fun reward for reading!

Barnes and Noble has a program that requires you to read any 8 books of your choosing and then select a free book from a list of books. All you have to do is print and fill out their "Passport to Summer Reading" form and take it in to the store. If your child is anything like mine, this will only take a couple of days. This offer ends 9/7/10.

Borders wants to Double-Dog Dare you to read 10 books this summer. Read 10 books of your choice and bring in your Double-Dog Dare form and receive a free book! There are 10 great selections to choose from listed on their website.

Half Price Books has a Feed Your Brain program that runs June 1 until July 31. Kids can earn a $3 shopping credit for each week they read at least 15 minutes per day!

There are reading programs at your local library. I know San Marcos, Kyle, and Buda libraries are all doing a reading incentive programs. I will give more details soon.
I am excited to get reading, and getting free books doesn't hurt either!

Welcome!

I am getting very excited for summer! We have lots of fun plans, and I am very glad that I will have Collin home again for a while. Collin has really been gaining speed with his reading. I love to hear him read and improve every day. Over the summer I don't want to lose what he has learned. We have set a couple fun reading goals. Goal #1 is Collin will read 100 books. Goal #2 is Collin will have 100 books read to him, 20 of which will be chapter books that either I read to him or that he listens to on CD. Our local library has a great selection of books on CD, and it's a great quiet time activity for Collin to do while I am busy. I think that this is actually a pretty easy goal considering every week we go to the library we get 20 books, and we read them all multiple times. Collin is very excited to say the he has read 100 books. I will be posting reviews of the books that we read. I am looking for lots of input too! What books do your children like to read? I am looking for some great books to read to boys. Let's share some fun books with each other and keep our kids reading this summer. Our official start date is June 4th.
